2017 Martha's Vineyard Book Festival Details

for each day's schedule go here:

Saturday, August 5 - Harbor View Hotel, Edgartown

Sunday, August 6 - Chilmark Community Center campus, Chilmark

About this year's festival: The Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival returns to the island this summer featuring a stellar line up of some of the country’s leading authors as well as rising stars. With 28 authors and two days of programming in two towns, it includes some stellar fiction and important work by leading voices on vital issues such as race, reproductive rights, politics, gender and the environment. It is also fun and interesting with a mix of novels, narrative journalism, memoirs and cookbooks. And in addition to the writers, there is an all-star cast to introduce and interview authors and moderate panels. The festival is free and open to all.

Getting There

The festival takes place in two locations on the island with Saturday held “down island” at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown, and on Sunday, “up island” on the Chilmark Community Center campus in Chilmark.

Edgartown Parking for Saturday: There is limited parking at the Harbor View Hotel and on the streets surrounding the hotel. Fuller Street runs parallel to North Water Street behind the hotel. One good option is to use the Edgartown Park and Ride. The Park and Ride lot is near the Triangle, off of Upper Main Street, on Dark Woods Road.  VTA Bus Route 11 stops here and takes you to lower Main Street.  You would then walk a few blocks up North Water Street to the hotel.

Chilmark Parking for Sunday:  There are a limited number of parking spaces available at Beetlebung Corner.  Options include:

  • Martha's Vineyard Savings Bank, South Road

  • Town Hall (after 12pm on Sunday), Middle Road

  • The Yard (after 10am), Middle Road

  • Chilmark Church (between 11am and 4:30), Menemsha Crossroad

  • Chilmark School, State Road

  • Chilmark Post Office, State Road

  • Chilmark Tavern, State Road.

  • Do not park at the Chilmark Store!

  • Parking is available at the Menemsha Shuttle Lot on Tabor House Road off of Middle Road. A shuttle taxi will be running throughout the festival on Sunday to bring people from the Menemsha Shuttle Lot to the Chilmark Community Center.

The Martha's Vineyard Book Festival and Author Series are held in alternating years.  In the summer of 2017, we will hold the seventh Martha's Vineyard Book Festival.  In the summer of 2016, we held the Martha's Vineyard Author Series.   The Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival and Author Lecture Series are presented under the auspices of the Chilmark Town Affairs Council, a 501(c)3 organization. The Vineyard Gazette and WBUR Cape & Islands are the festival’s media sponsors.  Cape Cod Five Charitable Foundation Trust, Harbor View Hotel, Cape Air, Vineyard Vines, Cronig's Market, Martha’s Vineyard Productions, and others generously provide additional support.

Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival — August 5-6, 2017

Stock up on beach reading and more at this biennial gathering of top authors with new books. It’s thick with fiction writers: Ann Patchett, Min Jin Lee, Amor Towles, and Richard Russo are among those scheduled. On the nonfiction side, Madeleine Blais’s memoir To the New Owners chronicles her family’s beloved summer house on Tisbury Great Pond.

Thank you, Jack. You were always there for us.
